1)Tonight we are speaking with Dolk, the front man for the Norwegian Black Metal band Kampfar. Dolk thanks for your time. The new album is called “Mare” and it takes the Kampfar sound in a new direction, yet keeps the sound fans are used to. What would you say are the most noticeable changes to the sound?
Uhh where shall I begin! Just look at the cover and you will see. We/I have been living with Kampfar for almost 17 years now. Mare is the next step. For 16 years we have been doing something safe. We had water to our knees at the most. With “Mare” We swim in the ocean. With “Mare” we re-define our black metal roots. Mare is everything but safe. “Mare” is black metal anon 2011. Old school witchery in modern sound and cover art with honesty!
We stayed 4 weeks in the Swedish woods with Peter in Abyss. Peter has been “the perfect match” for us. Together we have been making “Mare” Thinking “Old school black with modern sound” over and over and over. It has been a struggle from beginning to end. But the technical finesse and skills of Peter have made it all to a product we all can stand tall behind. With His skills we have manage to create an album without any drum replacements, triggers and all that shit. And that makes me so fucking proud to be able to say that in these days.
2) Tell us about the writing of the album. How long did it take to complete.
We stayed 4 weeks in the Swedish woods with Peter in Abyss.
Mare is dealing a lot with witchery and I have gone so deep into this that when I left Abyss and the Swedish woods after the recordings I felt a huge relief!
It was a huge impact on me this making of this album and living alone with my “Single malt” in Abyss and just focusing on my lyrics and all this shit the last week. Was like living with the witchery and witches and all the anger towards what this album is really all about for weeks. Besides that the true spirit of Abyss will push you even further. So it was a damn strong impact on me this whole album. It was like I left a bubble, a castle, or “Soria Moria” when I went back home again. The album is a direct conflict towards or between Christianity and witchery. Or more correctly what the high priests thought or claimed to be was witchery. Its very Northern historical as mentioned but also a huge Hail to the strong women in our history who walked their own way! It’s a thick red line from start till end of the album lyrically this time.
But the process of making albums is of course a long term one but also an impulsive one. It has always been like that in Kampfar at least. If it’s done during several years or if it’s done just in days it’s always a creative part and process taking place in the last hours. So was the situation also this time. The song “Mare” for instance was written the last night together with some whiskey before leaving for Sweden. Kampfar need pressure to act creative I guess. (I hope its not the alcohol hehe..)
3) Would you say it ranks as the bands best work so far?
Well beside that its some sort of “new re-defines” connected to the whole album. There are of course two major things.
The first is that the album have already entered the charts of the biggest music stores in Norway + that the album itself have already on release day sold more copies than “Heimgang” have done till this date. That’s of course something all alone.
Besides those two points it`s for sure an album That I am proud of as a musician. So in my opinion I think it’s the top notch album so far. But of course How can you choice a favorite of one of your child’s? Its impossible. All albums have made us what we are so..
4) Kampfar have been around since 1994. What has kept the band going all this time?
Kampfar is not a hobby its my life, its as simple as that really.
But I would like to look upon Kampfar as a life work and in that sentence also a life long mission to tell whats metal or not and to be able to spread the message that is…. Follow the Ravenheart and stop being like a thousand sheep’s out there. Create your own path and follow your own heart.
My aims for the future…Is to walk the path of Black Art and being able to see myself in the mirror in 10-20 years without being embarrassed for taking short cuts to success. But true to my self as an individual and musician, and being proud of it!
5) The band is currently 3 members. Do you find this arrangement works best for the Kampfar sound, or have you considered adding other members?
We have now “recruited” Ole Hartvigsen from the Norwegian band “Emancer” as a “Live” Guitarist.
He’s skills on the guitar is just fantastic and he was “handpicked” for the job really.
If this 4 piece will be more permanent in the future I can not tell you. But it works really nice now at least!
6) What would you say lies at the core of Kampfar`s music? Is there a certain message you are trying to deliver to fans?
Hmm.. it must have to be just the same answer as before in a way, cause its like I mentioned: Kampfar is not a hobby its my life, its as simple as that really.
But again I like to look upon Kampfar as a life work and in that sentence also a life long mission to tell whats metal or not and to be able to spread the message that is…. Follow the Ravenheart and stop being like a thousand sheep’s out there. Create your own path and follow your own heart.
Be an individual, Follow your own heart, Think for yourself! …. In a way this must be the “core” that your asking about!
7) Will we see Kampfar on tour this summer?
We have so far played Europe up and down 6 times now. So its about time to finally enter the States soon,And just today in fact I was applying for wisa at the American embassy so we are leaving Norway in 3 weeks now for the „Black Path Of America“ tour.
It makes me really proud to be able to travel around and doing gigs all over, and to meet peoples that have traveled for up to 10 ours just to see a kampfar show. This is for me so much more real than just selling a lot of albums. This is what makes me really humble and proud in what we are doing. I am so looking forward to finally meet all those maniacs over there. It will be a meeting in pure respect and honor!
8) In closing please leave our readers with any final thoughts or comments and thanks for your time.
