Kenny Bass - Metal Unto The Masses

http://metaluntothemasses.blogspot.com/

If you are a fan of Tool, Opeth, Katonia, or ICS Vortex  keep reading! When the sky darkens, the thunder claps, and the lightning strikes, it is time to put "Le Temps Detruit Tout" on the stereo and turn the volume up to 11! As I am listening to this album and trying to write this blog, I am at a loss for words because the music is mesmerizing and the lyrics are so emotional and beautiful. I was amazed to read that this is a one man album! That's right, Chris "Morbid" Hathcock performed all instruments and vocals AND composed all music and lyrics for this album.

Track listing:

  1.  Nihil
  2. In Pursuit Of Redemption
  3. Mutually Assured Destruction
  4. Enemy
  5. Lie To Me
  6. Silence
  7. Le Tenia
  8. Patience
  9. Nihil Ex Nihilo
  10. With Folded Arms (Bonnus track)
  11. Losing My Religion (REM cover) (Bonus track)

The lyrics and concepts of The Reticent are written around life experiences and are not afraid to face the darker side of life. We all know that life isn't always fluffy bunnies and pretty flowers. Sometimes life is a bottle of whiskey and solitude. Chris doesn't seem to be the slightest bit afraid to pour his heart out and write songs that come from the deepest and darkest corners of his soul.  "Le Temps Detruit Tout" touches on love, pain, solitude, depression, fear, and other emotions that I am not quite sure that I have ever felt or can even begin to describe!

The cover of "Losing My Religion" is one of the best cover songs I have ever heard and takes this song to a whole new level and gives it all new meaning. One of my favorite lines from this album is from track 7, Le Tenia. Here is the line that sends chills down my spine every time i hear it or even read it:

"And time coils around my neck
like a nose that lets me breathe.
Fading repose.
No one can stay."
Below, is the video for the bonus track "With Folded Arms". The harmonizing in this song is simply beautiful! This song is full of spectacular vocals that would make a monk jealous! This song is very deep and powerful and I could write an entire blog just about the man behind the inspiration of the song and what it means to me.

As I draw this review to a close, the rain comes pouring down! I highly recommend this album to anyone who can handle an assault on their emotions and want to be taken to a place in their mind that they typical ignore. This is a prog metal masterpiece! Grab yourself a cup of coffee or warm tea or whatever beverage you like to sit down and sip on and let the music take over and let the tears roll if you need to.
